{"id":71,"date":"2017-03-24T11:28:53","date_gmt":"2017-03-24T10:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wolfwithafoxtail.com\/blog\/?p=71"},"modified":"2022-08-20T16:41:11","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T14:41:11","slug":"found-in-translation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wolfwithafoxtail.com\/blog\/?p=71","title":{"rendered":"Found in Translation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As almost every person who enjoys watching movies, I do have my appreciation for Sofia Coppola\u2019s Lost in Translation. A story that deals with being overwhelmed by your surroundings, with the feeling of living in a culture that\u2019s so unfamiliar to you that you feel like you\u2019re drowning. An aesthetically pleasing and touching take on the quirky, confusing Japan that all of us (think that we) know and distantly appreciate. Of course, Japan isn\u2019t just that. Nor is it just the traditional temples and tea ceremonies. Japan, as every other country, but at the same time <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than every other country, requires not only superficial knowledge, but also understanding of the culture and language to break through the sparkly layer that lies on top of it. Kind of like how you have to get through the layer of foam to get to the best part of the cappuchino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I\u2019m not pretending I\u2019m somehow untouchable by the whole foreigner-syndrome, or that I understand everything that\u2019s happening around me (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definitely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not), because as one of my professors once said; \u201cYou can study Japan for your entire life, and still know as little as the day you started.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, beyond the big buildings, the loud music and the cute culture, beyond the exclamations of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OhYourJapaneseIsSoGood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (it honestly isn\u2019t) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WillYouSpeakEnglishWithMe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lies a world of little encounters and personal stories that have rekindled the love I have for this country, the language, and the people in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Japan I know\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* is the drunk guy crying on a street corner at sunset because he\u2019s going to marry the girls of his dreams and he\u2019s so happy he doesn\u2019t know what to do with himself.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* is old ladies chattering about dinner and how proud they are about learning a new skill. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* is gyoza in bars with tattooed man telling boisterous stories you don\u2019t even want to consider not believing.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* is helping someone carry bags and receiving an orange as a thank you.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* is random little gifts of tea and holding hands with other girls and sharing your food. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* is a girl clinging to your neck in the middle of the night because she\u2019s queer and doesn\u2019t know how to tell anyone except the one foreigner she spotted and realised was queer as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I digress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan is a country that\u2019s easy to get lost in when you\u2019re too certain about what you\u2019re going to find.
